6 Ways to Keep Your Dog Active but Cool in the Summer

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of Wellness®. The opinions and text are all mine.

This post is sponsored by Wellness® and the BlogPaws® Pet Influencer Network™.  I am being compensated to help share information about the Wellness® CORE® RawRev™ raw food dog food but Girl in Betsey only shares information we feel is relevant to our readers. Neither Wellness or PetSmart are responsible for the content of this article.

I love playing with my dog in the summer because it’s a great way for both of us to get our exercise (and bonding) in sans rains. However, because my dog has a huge fur coat, I have to be cognizant of how much time we spend outside with her. Read on for a few of my trusty tips on how I “beat the heat” in the summer with my fur baby.

1. Keep your Dog Hydrated

Because dogs can’t sweat, you have to be extra careful on watching if your dog is getting overheated. A few signs for this are watching if your dog is becoming lethargic, has bloodshot eyes, and even if they appear more pale than usual. I always make sure to have water around if we’re out and I’m always filling up her water bowl at home.

2. Shade Shade Shade

Just because it’s hot out doesn’t mean you can’t continue with fun summer activities. We love to go on picnics in the summer but always make sure we set up shop in the shade. Because we always pack a picnic lunch for us, we don’t want to Bella to be left out, so we bring along her favourite food, Wellness® CORE® RawRev™. What’s great about this food is it’s packed with protein and its grain-free kibble is combined with 100% raw meat pieces which Bella loves. This food is great because it helps keep my dog healthy and active, even in the summer. A huge benefit that I want to point out about this food is it helps promote strong joints and muscles. Check out my last blog post for 4 benefits of feeding your dog raw food here.

3. Cool Off

Another annual summer activity we participate in (it takes the entire family) is washing Bella outside on the terrace. She loves this because it’s a quick and easy way for her to cool off. We use luke warm water to scrub her down and when she’s done, she lays in the sun to cool off. She might put up a fuss at first, but later realizes how much better she feels.

4. Take Them for a Drive in the AC

Bella loves going for car rides, it’s probably one of her favourite things. Obviously, in the summer, we can’t leave her in the car while we run errands, so we take her out for a spin and let the AC blow on her while having her window down so she can stick her (big) head out. She loves this and sometimes we even stop for a cold treat too.

5. Swimming Time

Another fantastic way for your dog to cool down is to let them go for a dip. We sometimes take Bella to our nearby dog park (which looks out onto a dog-friendly lake) and she goes for a little swim. Not only does this instantly cool them down, but it’s a wonderful way to bond with your pet.

6. Walking Later at Night

We like to go for walks all year round, but Bella loves going out in the summer because there’s more action outside. With that said, I make sure to walk her later on in the evenings when it has cooled down. She and I both win because she gets her walk in and I make sure she’s not getting overheated.

Great tips! Our Golden really doesn’t like the heat so this post is very timely.

We also do these for our labrador-pitbull mix Rio and one thing we always make sure was to offer him water with some ice.

What a cute pup!! We have also taught our dog to put her feet in the water when she gets hot. It instantly cools her down

my dog Freddie LOVES car rides with the AC on and windows down! I’m still working on getting him to like the water though, he’s terrified whenever the little waves come near him on the beach!

Wow! Your pup is stunning! SO beautiful. Great tips too. Our pup is so small we rarely take him with us places, but we are always giving him water.

My pup loves to swim! The problem is that she won’t drink water when we’re out anywhere, even if it is from her own bowl!

Your pup is absolutely adorable! I have two that love swimming, so it is always a go to summer activity for us.

Aw Bella is so beautiful! These are all such great activities for the pups. In AZ it’s hard to get them outside for longer than 10 mins, but they do always love taking a dip in the pool. P.S. My dog is also named Bella 🙂
