With football season just around the corner, girlfriends are frantically texting their just-as-clueless friends asking for advice on what to say, do, clap, yell, during a football game that they’re planning to watch with their beau..Don’t be the only one who’s not in the loop, check out this guide for easy tips and tricks on how to win your man’s heart and look cool in front of his buds..
I have endured plenty of games pretending I know everything there is to know about this very popular sport with no clue what’s in front of me. I don’t want this to happen to you, it’s no fun sticking out like a sore thumb while people are speaking another language right next to you and you’re just nodding along and saying ‘Oh yeah, I know exactly what you mean!’
Below are a few terms and easy (emphasis on the easy) definitions of your must-know lingo into the ever elusive game of football…It’s go time!
Down: A period of action that starts when the ball is put into play and ends when the play is completed.
End zone: A 10-yard-long area at both ends of the field. Basically you want your boyfriend to get his butt to that point if he’s in the game.
Field goal: A kick, worth three points, that can be attempted from anywhere on the field but is usually attempted within 40 yards of the goalpost.
Interception: A pass that’s caught by a defensive player, ending the offence’s possession of the ball.
Kickoff: A free kick (the receiving team can’t make an attempt to block it) that puts the ball into play.
Punt: A kick made when a player drops the ball and kicks it while it falls toward his foot.
Safety: A score, worth two points, that the defence earns by tackling an offensive player in possession of the ball in his own end zone.
Snap: When the ball is hiked (tossed between the legs) by the centre to the quarterback, to the holder on a kick attempt, or to the punter. **When the snap occurs, the ball is officially in play and action begins. Commonly used in this sentence: “And there’s the snap…”
Touchdown: A score, worth six points, that occurs when a player in possession of the ball crosses the plane of the opponent’s goal line, or when a player catches the ball while in the opponent’s end zone, or when a defensive player recovers a loose ball in the opponent’s end zone.
To give you a bit more info on the game:
The offence (team with the ball) makes their way up to the field to score a touchdown. The defence must stop them.
So this game sound simple yet? It’s not when you’re the one on the field, but as a loyal girlfriend it’s a great way to bond, understand a few rules of the game, maybe even throw a “Nice snap!”and “Touchdown!” into the mix and you’ll be good to go in no time..
Because this was a very informative post I wanted to give you some insight for what to wear on game day:
Go for a jersey on top in your team’s colours and bring a sweater/jacket just in case because the game is outdoors and if it starts raining you’re going to be quite cold…if you feel like jazzing it up a bit, go for booties because they will give you some height while you’re standing next to your man who is assumably towering over you. If you want to don your teams colours in a subtle way and you don’t happen to have a jersey on hand, don’t worry because you can just pick up a nail polish at your closest beauty supply store in your teams colours, it’s a cute way to show you care and requires little to no effort on your part…hope this guide helped! And have fun at the game(s) this season!
