How to Date in the Digital Era

This post is sponsored by Plenty of Fish. I am being compensated to help share information about the Plenty of Fish redesigned mobile app but Girl in Betsey only shares information we feel is relevant to our readers. Read on for what my personal thoughts are on the newly designed Plenty of Fish mobile app.

In the era of digital, comes digital dating. I for one am all for this because I’m just too busy to actually go out and meet people in person these days. With dating apps, there’s a consensus that there’s no thought behind it, it’s just a numbers game and the matter of swiping left or right. Well, I’m here to dispel that myth and offer tips on how to keep the conversation going.

I have used a few dating apps before, but just started using Plenty of Fish. Not sure what Plenty of Fish is? Plenty of Fish is a dating app and site an astounding number of more than 150 million registered users. What I like about this particular app is how much you can fill out your profile, to what you’re looking for in a significant other to things about you such as if you have children or what colour hair, eyes you have.

I also like the new conversation-focused features because you can actually comment on specific pieces of content on a user’s profile. This update is called Spark; Spark is an in-app feature that allows a user to easily initiate a conversation. This is great because let’s say you matched with someone that’s got photography listed on his or her profile, and if you’re a blogger like me, that’s basically a match made in heaven, right? This makes it a heck of a lot easier to start the conversation because now you have a common starting off point.

How it works is you pick up and drag a conversation icon over any aspect of a potential date’s profile, it makes it super easy to quote and comment on profile content – from photos to interests.

So, what’s the point? The point is it’s POF’s commitment to helping singles connect in a meaningful way, even though it’s all done online. Did you know members are 22% more likely to receive a reply to a message sent with the new functionality? Spark also increases the probability of a message leading to a conversation (at least 2 replies by each person) by 15%. Those are some pretty good odds if you ask me.

Personally, I love this feature; it’s so much easier to strike up a conversation now that there’s something in particular, to talk about. To be honest, I’m quite old fashioned, I feel since I’m the girl I shouldn’t have to be the one to talk first, but now with this new feature, that thinking went out the window.

I think there’s a notion that romance is dead, but it doesn’t have to be. We, as individuals, have to make more of a conscience effort to bring the conversation in the direction we want it to go. We need to up our standards and not settle for ‘hey, what’s up?’ anymore. We need to work on our conversation skills, take chances and be open to trying new things. After all, you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.

how-to-date-in-the-digital-eraThe Plenty of Fish mobile app is available for download on iOS, Android and Windows phones.

This is so cool! I love that dating online is becoming more acceptable! I met my boyfriend online and we’ve been together for over 2 years now! We started out long distance (I was in Hawaii, he was in Toronto), then I moved to the east coast, then to Canada and now we live together! Next month, we’re going to Hawaii and he’ll meet my parents in person for the first time. It’s an incredible story, and I’m glad that we can tell it! 🙂

Great post! Dating is completely different now. When I got divorced I was lost! Apps like Plenty of Fish helped build up my confidence again and helped me to meet some great people.

I actually met my husband on OKCupid! So online dating can be successful if you’re willing to put in the time. I’m pretty good a reading people, so online dating was pretty easy for me because I could really see what the guys’ intentions were no matter they actually said. Plenty of Fish has come a long way since I used it. I have to admit I didn’t care for their platform back when I was online dating but these updates seem to be very functional and helpful!

I’m not really looking to date anyone right now, but I just downloaded Bumble for the BFF feature and still find it hard to introduce myself to matches, lol! I think the conversation features on this app are really cool in that way.

Just keep swimming gal! I missed the digital age of dating but I always have thought of it something akin to looking for a job or networking. How? Bottom line is, if you aren’t visible (in person, online, etc), you can’t be considered as a candidate, whether it’s for work OR love.

Interesting that an app has been created for the busy woman to date. Nice! Some ppl don’t put in much effort so this is great!

Ok……. do you have any advice about meeting up with someone after chatting with them for a while? I am nervous about that.

I only dipped a toe into the online dating world when I was still out looking for Mr. Right, but since that was 10 years ago, a LOT has changed since then! It sounds like a lot of things have improved since a lot of the online dating I was exposed to was so based on looks and not nearly enough on common interests. This sounds like a good step in the right direction!
