With Summer here, I’m looking forward to taking more time to focus on all things mental health. Of course, mental health is an all-year-round pursuit. However, I find during the summer, I feel myself starting to slow down and taking some time to check-in. Continue reading for ways I plan to improve and focus on my mental health this season.
1. Self-care
Taking time to myself and focusing on self-care is so worth it, in my opinion. I always feel so much better when I have taken time to engage in relaxing activities such as having a bubble bath, enjoying a thorough skincare routine (hello face masks!), and practicing mindfulness or meditation (I haven’t done this a lot, admittedly but really want to start). Check out my blog post on these self-care habits to wake up feeling more rested.
2. Maintain a healthy lifestyle
Getting some form of movement in is super important to me, whether that’s running on the treadmill, walking my dog Lily or anything else that involves some kind of exercise. I admit I am not super diligent when working out, but I think moving my body as much as possible is helpful. Even if I can’t get a workout in, I love going on hikes and spending time outdoors; it’s so healing and allows you to take the beauty around you.
3. Playing games
So much of my day is spent in front of the computer working at the office or at home, so I try mixing in some games when possible. I have recently been using the website https://www.mortgagecalculator.org/money-games/ to play games while brushing up on my financial knowledge. It’s a great way to multitask while having fun! They have a huge selection of games to choose from. Plus, their website is very user-friendly—one of my must-haves for browsing websites. In particular, I enjoy playing Idle Pet Business which is part of the business simulation games category and is a great way to learn about operating a pet business. I am a huge animal lover, so this game is fun!
Another game I enjoy playing is Coffee Shop. I am obsessed with all things coffee, and it’s an excellent way to learn how to operate a coffee shop virtually and try to earn as much money as possible within a specific time frame. Playing games is so relaxing and takes your mind off of everyday stress. I grew up playing games every weekend with my family, so this is quite nostalgic for me.
4. Read a book
As previously mentioned, I am usually in front of the computer and have found I have enjoyed decreasing my screen time, especially at night. This is when I typically reach for a good book. I like to switch between fiction and non-fiction for a variety. There’s something special about reading a physical book and decompressing after a busy day.
5. Eat healthy
Eating healthy is easier said than done, of course, but it’s essential when maintaining your mental health. I have even been trying to fast lately on the weekends, which has been helpful. Overall, I usually try to stick to healthy, well-balanced meals and always watch my sugar intake as it can spike up my stress levels and affect my mental health negatively.
